The second of six concerts in the International Festival’s complete survey of J S Bach’s keyboard concertos features a work that’s rarely heard. Bach left just a fragment of his D minor Concerto BWV 1059 completed, but the exceptional Iranian-American harpsichordist Mahan Esfahani has reconstructed the work and performs his interpretation with musicians from Scotland’s fine Dunedin Consort.
After works for solo keyboard, Esfahani concludes his concert with the pastoral beauty of Bach’s F major Concerto BWV 1057, an elegant reworking of his own fourth Brandenburg Concerto.
This major concert series at International Festival 2019 brings together some of today’s finest, most pioneering harpsichordists with musicians from the Dunedin Consort. Five of the six concerts take place in the remarkable surroundings of Edinburgh’s intimate St Cecilia’s Hall – Scotland’s oldest purpose-built concert hall, dating back to 1763. The Hall also houses the University of Edinburgh’s rich collection of historical musical instruments, including an astonishing collection of harpsichords which are featured across these revelatory concerts.
