Claudia Huckle


Anglo-German contralto Claudia Huckle studied at the Royal College of Music in London, the New England Conservatory in Boston and the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. She is a graduate of the prestigious Cafritz Young Artist Program at Washington National Opera, was a member of the Ensemble at Oper Leipzig for four seasons from 2009 and won the 2013 Birgit Nilsson Remembrance Award at the Operalia competition in Verona.

This season Claudia makes a return to Opéra National de Paris as Blumenmädchen/Stimme in Parsifal, to Teatro Real Madrid for their Ring Cycle, and to the Bregenz Festival for Suzuki Madame Butterfly. Recent highlights
include her debut at Teatro alla Scala Milan singing Die allwissende Muschel in Strauss Die Ägyptische Helena, conducted by Franz Welser-Möst as well as her debut at the Bregenzer Festspiele as Erda/Flosshilde in the Ring Cycle. On the concert platform she will perform Handel Messiah with the English Concert and Trevor Pinnock; Haydn Paukenmesse at the Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino conducted by Zubin Mehta; Mahler Symphony No.2 with the Orchestra of Opera North and Garry Walker; and Beethoven Symphony No. 9 with the Royal
Philharmonic Orchestra and Sir Andrew Davis.

Concert highlights include Mahler Symphony No. 2 at the Festival de Saint-Denis with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France and Myung-Whun Chung; Saint-Saëns Oratorio de Noël with the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Vasily Petrenko; Handel Messiah with the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra and Trevor Pinnock; Mahler Kindertotenlieder with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and Michael Sanderling; Mendelssohn Elijah with the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Sakari Oramo; Brahms Alto Rhapsody with the Royal Northern Sinfonia and Lars Vogt; Schwertleite Die Walküre with the Bayerische Rundfunk Symphony Orchestra and Sir Simon Rattle and Elgar Dream of Gerontius and Sea Pictures with Hallé Orchestra conducted by Sir Mark Elder. Claudia appeared at the 2021 BBC Proms singing Mozart Requiem with the Britten Sinfonia conducted by David Bates.

Claudia’s opera roles include Erda Das Rheingold / Siegfried for Grand Théâtre de Genève, Opera North and Oper Leipzig; Flosshilde Rheingold / Götterdämmerung for Opéra National de Paris; Suzuki for Zurich Opera and Glyndebourne on Tour, for whom she also sang the title role in Britten The Rape of Lucretia; Hippolyta in Britten A Midsummer Night’s Dream for Glyndebourne Festival; Marfa in Mussorgsky Khovanshchina for Birmingham Opera Company; Mérope in Oedipe, First Norn Götterdämmerung and Schwertleite Die Walküre at the Royal Opera House, where she also appeared as Third Lady Die Zauberflöte, a role she has sung at the Festival d’Aix-en- Provence and for Dresden Semperoper; Hänsel Hänsel und Gretel for Garsington Opera; Olga, Hänsel and Third Lady for Oper Leipzig; Smeton Anna Bolena for Washington National Opera and Dalila in Saint-Saëns Samson et Dalila for the Chelsea Opera Group.

In concert she has also sung Anna in Berlioz Les Troyens with Valery Gergiev and Maxwell Davies’ Hogboon under Sir Simon Rattle, both with the London Symphony Orchestra. Claudia has recently recorded Mahler Das Lied von der Erde in the composer’s own arrangement for piano, with the conductor and pianist Justin Brown and
tenor Nicky Spence. The CD is due for release in 2022 on the Champs Hill Records label.
