Viola
Raquel Massadas was born in Portugal where she started her music lessons at the age of 4. She studied at the Conservatório de Música de Aveiro and Academia Nacional Superior de Orquestra in Lisbon, continuing at the Northwestern University in Chicago, and then in London with Itzhak Rashkovsky and Simon Rowland-Jones at the Royal College of Music. After her journey as a professional violist, from Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra to Orquestra Gulbenkian in Lisbon, Raquel began her baroque studies with Richard Gwilt and Enrico Onofri and later with Elizabeth Wallfisch. She also has widened her repertoire by playing viola d’amore.
Raquel was a member of the European Union Baroque Orchestra conducted by Lars Ulrik Mortensen. She has toured the world performing in Europe as well as China, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, Singapore, Mexico and the USA. Raquel Massadas appears on numerous recordings as Sony, cpo, Harmonia Mundi, Enja Records, Signum Classics, Berlin Classics and Naxos. She regularly plays with the Freiburger Barock Orchester, Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, Vox Luminis, L’Arpeggiata, Ensemble Deutsche Hofmusik and Os Músicos do Tejo. She is a founding member of the Coríntio Ensemble. She is a member of Barocksolisten München, Orquestra Barroca Casa da Música and Dresdner Festspielorchester.
