Cracking solo movements of great intensity, joy, and prayerfulness

Ahead of our upcoming performances of Mozart’s Mass in C Minor, we caught up with our tenor soloist Benjamin Hulett

What can you tell us about this piece of music?

The Great Mass in C minor is a stunning work by Mozart. You may not realise how much of the piece you already know, but I can guarantee that you’ve heard it used in film, television, and all over the radio, such is its emotional power, beauty, and popularity. And those are just the sections that Mozart got round to finishing!

What are you looking forward to the most in these concerts?

The greatest draw for these concerts is the infectious enthusiasm and personality of John Butt. He will bring all the energy of a symphonic-scale performance to the smallest group of performers possible for this double-choir work, and the effect will be no less powerful.

Is there anything in particular the audience should listen out for?

With cracking solo movements of great intensity, joy, and prayerfulness I would normally be drawn to the duelling sopranos, but for me the pregnant tension of the opening bars of the Kyrie is irresistible and a desert island disc moment.
