Welsh soprano Alys Mererid Roberts graduated from the Royal Academy of Music in London, where she studied with Mary Nelson and Ingrid Surgenor, after a first degree at Durham University. Her studies were kindly supported by the Bryn Terfel Foundation, the Michael and Sally Payton Scholarship, the Maple Harper Charitable trust, the Clive and Sylvia Richards Charity and the Sickle Foundation. She has also been a part of the prestigious Samling Academy.
Her roles with Royal Academy Opera included Euridice Orphée aux Enfers, Barbarina Le Nozze Di Figaro, Pannochka in Rimsky-Korsakov’s May Night, Amore and Damigella L’incoronazione di Poppea, and Una Conversa Suor Angelica. Whilst still a student, she also appeared in the premiere of Gair ar Gnawdfor by Pwyll ap Sion for Welsh National Opera, and created the role of Muse in the opera-film Hedd Wyn by Stephen McNeff, also for WNO, as well as singing 2nd Boy The Magic Flute for Mid Wales Opera.
Following her graduation from the RAM in 2017, Alys made her debut at Opera Holland Park in La Rondine, Tweedle Dee in Will Todd and Maggie Gottlieb’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, and created the roles of Tiny Tim and Fan in the premiere of Todd’s A Christmas Carol for the same company. Her other roles include Sandman and Dew Fairy in Hänsel und Gretel for Pop Up Opera, and Yum Yum The Mikado with Charles Court Opera. She has also returned to Opera Holland Park as a Christine Collins Young Artist, singing Annina in their young artist production of La Traviata, as well as appearing as the Impressario and Bastienne in Pop Up Opera’s Mozart double-bill tour.
She has recently appeared as Flora in a critically-acclaimed new film of Britten’s The Turn of the Screw, recorded at Wilton’s Music Hall, as well as singing Polly Peachum The Beggar’s Opera and Shepherd Boy Tosca both for Mid Wales Opera, Second Woman Margot la Rouge for Opera Holland Park, and the title role in Rimsky-Korsakov’s The Golden Cockerel for ETO.
Her 22/23 season begins with returns to Mid Wales Opera as The Princess in Montsalvatge’s El Gato Con Botas (Puss in Boots) and Gretel Hänsel und Gretel.
