The oratorio emerged as a space where music, drama and public life converged. At the forefront of this musical movement was Handel, who created works that spoke not only to their biblical narrative but also to wider cultural and political currents. 

Based on Charles Jennens’ libretto, Belshazzar centres around the dramatic story of the fallen Babylon – the impious King Belshazzar is confronted by divine judgement as a mysterious hand foretells his downfall. Set against him are voices of warning, reflection and faith, as the narrative unfolds towards a moment of reckoning and renewal.
