SUMMARY:SCOTTISH PREMIERE - The Passion of Mary Magdalene
DESCRIPTION:Mary Magdalene is one of the most enigmatic figures of the Passion narrative\, close at hand and yet never quite in focus across the Gospels of Matthew\, Mark\, Luke\, and John. \nTansy Davies The Passion of Mary Magdalene \nJohn Butt director\nAnna Dennis Mary Magdalene\nMarcus Farnsworth Jesus \nMary Magdalene is one of the most enigmatic figures of the Passion narrative\, close at hand and yet never quite in focus across the Gospels of Matthew\, Mark\, Luke\, and John. Her relationship to Jesus has long intrigued poets\, believers\, and theologians alike\, and Tansy Davies joins their ranks in this new commission. Drawing on the musical forces of J.S. Bach’s John Passion\, she assembles the texts\, including poetry by Ruth Fainlight\, and writes music for her deep exploration of the Passion story from Mary Magdalene’s perspective. Expect something intimate\, numinous\, and revelatory. \nCo-commissioned by Edinburgh International Festival\, Barbican Centre & Dunedin Consort \nTickets from £15.50 \n  \nWith thanks to

SUMMARY:Cantatas & Concertos
DESCRIPTION:Imagine sitting in the Thomaskirche on Sunday morning in Leipzig\, four years into Bach’s tenure as musical director. By now you’re used to some extraordinary music from the great man\, but BWV 169 is something else. Not only does it begin with what can only be described as an organ concerto but then it uses just one alto voice to praise God alone. Telemann and Graupner both revel in the gorgeous combination of flute and oboe d’amore before a final Bach cantata draws all these threads together with a blockbuster organ sinfonia and and more stunning writing for massed woodwind. \nJohann Sebastian Bach Gott soll allein\, BWV 169\nGeorg Phillip Telemann Concerto for Flute\, Oboe d’amore\, Viola d’amore\, TWV 53:E1   \nChristoph Graupner Ouverture in F major\, GWV 445\nJohann Sebastian Bach Wir müssen durch viel Trübsal\, BWV 146   \nJohn Butt director\nAlexander Chance countertenor \nStephen Farr obbligato organ \nAlexandra Bellamy oboe d’amore \nKaty Bircher flute\nHuw Daniel viola d’amore   \nDunedin Consort side-by-side with players from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland  \nTickets: £50\, £43\, £33\, £27\, £18

SUMMARY:PREMIERE - Passion of Mary Magdalene
DESCRIPTION:Mary Magdalene is one of the most enigmatic figures of the Passion narrative\, close at hand and yet never quite in focus across the Gospels of Matthew\, Mark\, Luke\, and John. \nTansy Davies Passion of Mary Magdalene \nJohn Butt director\nAnna Dennis Mary Magdalene\nMarcus Farnsworth Jesus \nMary Magdalene is one of the most enigmatic figures of the Passion narrative\, close at hand and yet never quite in focus across the Gospels of Matthew\, Mark\, Luke\, and John.

SUMMARY:Open rehearsal: Sean Shibe: Scottish Lute - Edinburgh
DESCRIPTION:On Tuesday 3 March\, join us in Edinburgh for our open rehearsal of Sean Shibe: Scottish Lute. \nSean Shibe and Dunedin Consort dive into the archives of the National Library of Scotland to explore the musical riches in its collection\, from Scottish psalms to music for viol by Marin Marais\, and a uniquely Scottish version of John Dowland’s Lachrimae\, or Seaven Teares. Sean takes to his lute with a handful of string players to guide us through a cosmopolitan\, voracious\, and richly-varied musical landscape at the turn of the seventeenth century.   \nNOTE: Owing to limited space\, priority will be given to guitar students.

SUMMARY:Lillian Gordis: French Connection
DESCRIPTION:Jean-Philippe Rameau is most famous now as a composer of grand operas\, full of myth and phalanxes of woodwind\, but in 1741 he published a remarkable collection of pieces with tantalising titles. \nJean-Philippe Rameau Premier concert\, Pièces de clavecin en concerts \nÉlisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre Trio Sonata in B flat major\nJohann Sebastian Bach Trio Sonata from The Musical Offering\, BWV 1079 \nJohann Sebastian Bach Trio Sonata in C major\, BWV 529\nGeorg Philipp Telemann Paris Quartet\, TWV 43:G1\nJean-Philippe Rameau Cinquième concert\, Pièces de clavecin en concerts   \nMatthew Truscott violin\nRosie Bowker flute\nJonathan Manson viola da gamba \nLillian Gordis harpsichord   \nJean-Philippe Rameau is most famous now as a composer of grand operas\, full of myth and phalanxes of woodwind\, but in 1741 he published a remarkable collection of pieces with tantalising titles—not only pen-portraits of his fellow musicians like Forqueray and Boucon but also more general character studies of La Timide and L’Indifférente. JS Bach’s Musical Offering has its own remarkable backstory\, a collection composed for Frederick the Great of Prussia on a dastardly theme from the King himself. Fittingly for a flute-playing\, Francophile monarch\, this programme is filled with music that revels in crossing the border.   \n Download your free programme \nPre-concert talk at 6.30pm  \nPerformance running time approx 100 minutes \nIncluded in the Edinburgh Subscription Season. SUMMARY:Handel: Messiah
DESCRIPTION:It’s no surprise that Handel’s Messiah continues to draw audiences back year after year. There is nothing quite like it. Although the Hallelujah chorus has become the work’s calling card\, Handel wrote every note to impress and astound his listeners. Its choruses are as grand as anything Handel ever composed\, the solo writing profoundly moving\, the drama powerful and compelling. Performed ‘the Dunedin way’ as Handel would have first heard it\, with a small orchestra\, a team of twelve singers and soloists who step out from the chorus\, there are few more uplifting ways to celebrate the festive season.   \nGeorge Frideric Handel Messiah\, HWV 56   \nJohn Butt director \nNardus Williams soprano\nLotte Betts-Dean mezzo-soprano\nJoshua Ellicott tenor\nDingle Yandell bass\nPaul Whittaker BSL interpreter \nThis performance will be BSL interpreted\, please email info@dunedin-consort.org.uk if you require an accessible seat. \nrunning time approx 180 minutes (inc 20 min interval) \nDownload your Messiah programme
