Isaac Tolley

Bass Baritone, Bridging the Gap

Edinburgh native Isaac Tolley completed his operatic education at the Theaterakademie August Everding (Munich) in 2023, having earned a bachelor’s degree from the Royal Academy of Music in London. 

Throughout his studies, Isaac gained experience in multiple roles and sung regularly with the Munich Radio Orchestra. Working with leading conductors and directors, highlights from his two years at the Prinzregententheater include the roles of Martino in Rossini’s “L’occasione fa il Ladro” and Re in Handel’s “Ariodante.” A keen exponant of new music, engagements for 2024 include world premiers for Staatstheater Augsburg (C:\>title Labyrinth) and the Munich Biennale (Nimmersatt). 

Isaac appears regularly in recital and has a wide repertoire which encompasses works such as Schubert’s “Schwanengesang” and “Winterreise,” Schumann’s “Liederkreis Opus 39,” and “Dichterliebe,” as well as works by Finzi, Wolf, Poulenc, Ravel, and Strauss. Upcoming recitals include a performance of Schubert’s “Winterreise” under the mentorship of pianist Gerold Huber. Isaac remains at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater München, where he studies art song performance with Professors Christian Gerhaher and Gerold Huber, with a particular emphasis on German Romantic repertoire. 

Beyond solo performances, Isaac frequently appears as a guest in the Bavarian Radio Choir and is set to join the Dunedin Consort for the Choral Tour “Scattered Rhymes” in May 2024, under the direction of Nicholas Mulroy. He was selected a Brixen Classics academist for 2022, covering Sir Bryn Terfel, and a Bayreuth Scholar for 2022, following success at the annual competition of the Leipzig Wagner Society.
